Rule of Odds

1, 2, 3 Horses

Rule of Odds: the rule of odds states that images are more visually appealing when there is an odd number of subjects.

I agree. Am I the only one that finds odd numbers in general so much more interesting than even ones? On that note, I also feel like people’s lucky numbers are always odd, but I could be wrong. Nonetheless, when taking a photo, it’s important to include an odd number of things within the composition. This is because when you have even numbers, our brain is computed to try and compare them between one another. And when there is an odd number, it doesn’t resort to grouping and comparing things, rather, it allows our eye to flow about the image more freely. So, for this photography assignment I decided to take pictures of these three horses. I really like the way they don’t complement each other too. They each feel like their own thing, it’s impossible to group them. They’re all spaced out from each other and are completely different colors. Prior to this assignment, I’ve never heard of this concept before, but I do really like it and am going to start using it more in my photography. You should try it out too!
