This photograph is about the lighthouse. It’s aging exterior is covered with stains and rust, and patches where it’s decaying structure has been reinforced. Yet it also stands with a poise and fortitude, and is majestic despite the many imperfections. I sought to capture these aspects of its visuals in my picture, and to focus on these.
The ocean and sunset in the background are bright and beautiful, yet my photograph was meant to be about the lighthouse. Usually highlights capture the eye’s attention, but instead I filled the frame with shadow. The lighthouse stands in front of the sun and is in the dark because of it, but because it takes up so much of the composition it is still the dominant visual and its details and story can be appreciated by the viewer.
