In an effort to create mood in an image, I played around with various lightings and light sources. The goal was an end result that was dark and almost sad while at the same time feeling warm and comfortable. Using an iPhone in order to light up the purple jacket, the background can be somewhat made out but is outshone by the figure – the focal point of the image.
Although not clearly visible, behind the person is a shelf full of toys and games. The idea was that despite all these fun, natural forms of entertainment, the decision is to ignore those in face of the alternative; one’s device. On their phone, the person is effectively shutting out all the other ways to have a good time, and putting themselves in their own private world.
