In my weekly photo blog, one of my challenges was to take photos that implemented compositional techniques in photography.

Lighting

This week’s challenge was to use our Speedlites creatively. A Speedlite is an attachment to the camera that emits a flash quickly in order to capture a single moment in time. I decided to test how quickly the camera took a photo by tossing my ukulele in the air to give an illusion that it was floating. I also took this photo in the dark in order to prevent having too much light in the image.

Negative Space

This week’s challenge was to use negative space effectively in an image. I decided to photograph this origami flower in the left of the photo shining in the edge of a spotlight on the ground, in order to demonstrate the negative space in the right of the photo.

Center Frame Portrait

Antisocial

This week’s challenge was to exhibit loneliness by isolating a subject in the center frame of a photo. I chose to photograph my friend on her phone, being isolated from the conversations surrounding her. I later edited the colors in Photoshop, making everything except her in black and white in order to emphasize her loneliness.

Balance

This week’s challenge was to use balance in a photo in the “Accidental Renaissance” style. I interpreted this style as depicting many bodies reaching towards desires, as depicts many renaissance paintings. Therefore, I decided to photograph these plants that seem to reach outwards from their stems.

Leading Lines

Grand Piano

This week’s photo challenge was to show the “concept of infinity” by using leading lines. I decided to photograph the keys of a Grand Piano, without showing their end, in order to make it seem like the keys went on forever. In addition, the concept of infinity may be applied to music, as there are infinite ways to write melodies and songs.

Symmetry Landscape

Ocean Beach – Berkeley, CA

This week’s challenge was to take a photo representing symmetry in landscape. Since nature is never perfectly symmetrical, I decided to photograph the waves on the beach, to showcase how the lines of the sand and the waves may symbolically represent symmetry, as lines are symmetric.
