Geometric Light Cover

My Geometric Light Cover, which I created using Illustrator, is titled “Phases”. For this project, I was inspired by the theme of the night sky, for if I were to display the light in my room during the night, I would want night-sky-related shapes to appear on my ceiling. As we were prompted to make two separate designs for the sides of the Light Cover, I chose to draw a dreamcatcher for one design, to represent the wonders and myths associated with dreaming and the night, and a moon and stars for the second design, to depict the wonders of the sky at night. Though there wasn’t a clear message that I wanted to convey with my designs, I later found meaning in the title I chose, “Phases” because the moon phases can be a symbol for the phases that one passes throughout their life. One phase in particular that I remember distinctly was my belief in dream catchers, hence the dreamcatcher in my design.

In Illustrator, I imported several images of a dreamcatcher and traced over the image using the pen tool. In our Digital Media classrooms, we have the privilege of being able to use Wacom Drawing Tablets, which I used to make the tracing easier. I then created the second design of the moon and stars with the pen tool by hand. I was greatly challenged by this project, as I am not an artist, but I’m thankful to have learned more about digital drawing and Illustrator’s capacities throughout the process.

I enjoyed this project very much, as I valued learning how to apply the different tools that we had learned in Illustrator to a real-life project. Seeing the light cover in real life felt very rewarding, as I had spent a lot of time designing it on the computer, and had no idea how the design would look in real life. I look forward to using the light cover in my room as a decoration.

T-Shirt Design

For my Illustrator Project, I decided to create a customized T-Shirt logo for the dance crew that a couple of my friends and I created together, in order to make personalized costumes for our future performances. Our crew, called the “3C Crew”, is composed of four members with dance backgrounds in Hip Hop. For the logo, I decided to draw an orange with our crew name as the individual slices. Just as how many shirts are designed today, I put the logo on a small size in the corner of the front of the shirt. On the sleeve, I created my own font with three c’s in orange, dripping from the bottom as if they were orange slices. On the back, I put our logo once again but in bigger, and then typed our individual names around the logo. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with the outcome.

I did not have a specific message to convey in mind when I created the drawing, but I created it with the goal of showcasing the creativity of our dance crew. The orange did not represent anything specific, but it can be interpreted as our group dynamic, since each member, or slice, has something to contribute.

I valued this project greatly because it allowed me to express my creativity and try something new. I have never designed anything before, so I found the learning process of designing a logo to be really interesting. Seeing the project come to life in 3D on the T-Shirt was also very rewarding because it turned out to be very similar to how I envisioned it.
