Experimental Film

For the Conceptual Project in Film class, we created experimental films based on our concept statements chosen in our English class. My concept statement was: “I am exploring the feeling of satisfaction through dancing”.

Experimental films, which rely on the audience to decipher meanings in the abstract aspect of the films, do not follow a narrative, story-like structure, but rather incorporate different elements of visual metaphors and “art for art’s sake”.

In my video, I chose to portray two dancers, disconnected from one another, eventually reuniting in order to convey satisfaction. Experimental elements in my film include different aspects of nature “dancing”, as well as a metaphorical blindfold.

I’m very grateful to have completed this project in my film class because I was able to learn a lot about the specific type of film and its uniqueness in comparison to traditional narrative film. I’ve been able to expand my appreciation for Experimental film since making one myself, as well as combine my two passions for dance and filmmaking, which I value greatly.
