Lyrical Essay
The English portion of our Narrative unit at Freestyle consisted of the Lyrical Essay, which combines the autobiographical information of a personal essay with the figurative language and form of poetry. I decided to write mine about journaling, and how it has been an escape from my busy life.

After trying our hand at writing our own Lyrical Essays, we were assigned to read multiple lyrical works written by various writers, including our main focus for the unit, Claudia Rankine, and her novel “Citizen”. After several in depth discussions regarding her intentions and delivery, we each wrote comparison essays of the novel with a journalist’s review.
